Fake Tanning 101

Got a winter escape planned? Once we’ve pulled our winter coats and jumpers out from storage, visions of a healthy summer glow tend to fall by the wayside. Sometimes a quick fix is needed pre-holiday so that you’ll feel amazing when you’re strolling by the pool in a bikini! Follow our fake tanning tips to achieve a beautiful, bronzed look.

Fake Tanning 101

Preparation

Fake tan responds best to exfoliated, moisturised skin. If you don’t prepare your skin properly before you apply your tan, you will end up with patchy, uneven results which will make you want to cover up, not show off your fabulous new glow.

Use a gentle scrub in the shower, then follow up with an exfoliating brush to rid yourself of patches of dry skin. Moisturise all over, making sure to pay particular attention to problem areas such as elbows, knees, wrists and feet. Lastly, ensure any cream has completely dried and sunk in before you begin tanning. These few simple steps are the best way to guarantee an even, natural looking tan, so don’t pass on the prep!

Protect Yourself

No one likes those telltale signs such as an orange hairline, nails or palms. Use Vaseline along the hairline and on the eyebrows to create a barrier and avoid tide marks. To protect your hands, make use of an applicator mitt or latex gloves. When you’ve finished applying the tan to the rest of your body, simply use cotton pads to add a light layer to the back of your hands and you’re ready to go.

The Right Shade

Choosing the right shade can be difficult. Are you dark? Fair? Olive skinned? It’s a good idea to try a test patch before going head first into an all over application. If you want a deep tan, two or three rounds of a medium shade will have more natural results than one in a very dark shade. For fairer skin, gradual tan is a great option. It will build a healthy glow with daily use, and nourishes your skin in the process.

Aftercare

Be sure to follow a good skincare routine in the days and weeks afterwards to prolong your tan. Again, gentle exfoliation and moisturising are the key – they will maintain even coverage and hydrate the skin for a beautiful tan that lasts, meaning you’ll feel confident every single day of your holiday.

So, with your tan sorted, all you need to worry about is sipping cocktails by the pool!
