Pear

If your body is bigger around the hips, thighs or bottom than you are generally considered pear shaped. Other bottom-heavy beauties include Beyonce and Kate Winslet who, unlike us mere mortals, have a professional stylist to advise them on how to work their womanly wares. But never fear; you too can look as gorgeous as the stars by following a few key pointers: say yes to A-line dresses that skim the hips and low necklines that emphasise the bust. Say no to tight, stretchy materials that can make the bum look bigger, and dresses that poof out around the legs adding volume.

V

Big up top but smaller round the middle? You are the classic V or strawberry shape, and the great news is that just about everything will look fabulous on your perfect pins. Do as fellow V-shaped ladies Jennifer Saunders and Charlize Theron do and flaunt your figure in a dress with a fitted bodice that flares at the skirt. Dresses that sit off the shoulder, or puff at the sleeves can make your top half appear broader than it is so these are best avoided. This gorgeous prom-style dress from M.I.M is the perfect choice, thanks to its demure shades, flared skirt and simple, yet elegant neckline.

Rectangle

Rectangular figures are straight up and down and join rectangular celebrities Fern Britton and Cynthia Nixon. Your perfect proportions mean you can wear most trends, and curves can easily be created with clothes that cinch at the waist. However, there are a few styles that should be avoided, namely straight sheath and dropped waists, which can have a ‘boyish’ affect. To counteract this, opt for shapely shift dresses, and halternecks.

Hourglass

Curvy hourglass figures go in at the waist and tend to be fuller around the bust and bum. Classic examples of the hourglass can be seen in Nigella Lawson and Kelly Brook, who compliment their curves in wrap or tie back dresses and sweetheart and V necklines. Embrace your waist and avoid baggy clothes (unless teamed with belt) and, if you’re blessed with a big bust, steer clear of heavily embellished bodices. This stunning hanky hem style dress will flatter your figure wonderfully and is sure to make you feel like the belle of the ball.
